LICE TREATMENT OPTIONS

Over-the-Counter (OTC) Treatments:

  • Pediculicidal shampoos:

These shampoos contain chemicals that kill lice and their eggs (nits). Follow the instructions on the bottle carefully.

  • Nit combs:

These fine-toothed combs can be used to manually remove lice and nits from the hair.

Natural Remedies:

  • Olive oil or mayonnaise: Apply a thick layer to the hair and scalp, cover with a shower cap, and leave on overnight. The oil or mayonnaise suffocates the lice. Wash it out thoroughly in the morning.

  • Tea tree oil: Mix a few drops of tea tree oil with carrier oil (such as olive oil) and apply it to the scalp. Leave it on for 30 minutes before washing it out.

  • Coconut oil: Similar to olive oil, coconut oil can suffocate lice.

Other Measures:

  • Wash bedding and clothing:

Wash all items that may have come into contact with lice in hot water (130°F or higher).

  • Vacuum:

Vacuum furniture, carpets, and floors to remove any lice or eggs that may have fallen off.

  • Seal unwashable items:

Place items that cannot be washed in airtight bags for at least two weeks to kill lice.

  • Check for reinfestation:

Continue to check for lice and nits regularly for several weeks after treatment.

Tips:

  • Repeat treatments as directed on the product or remedy.

  • Use a nit comb to remove lice and eggs even after using chemical treatments.

  • If the lice are not gone after several treatments, consult a healthcare professional.

  • Avoid using essential oils directly on the scalp as they can be irritating.

  • Be cautious when using home remedies, as some may not be effective or may cause allergic reactions.
